Lunch Break: A Bit About Braids

Truth about me: I’m a wannabe designer. A dedicated wannabe, but a wannabe, nonetheless. With all the tell-tale signs. Reading design blogs and trade publication websites, making fast friends with every girl designer I meet and probably falling in love with every guy designer, wondering if I have some magical design power hidden within that will appear someday, in Creative Suite, when I least expect but most need it.

So it should come as no surprise to you that Design Observer is one of my faves. I’ve been reading/stalking it for a long time.

Today, this showed up – it’s about the braids worn by the character of Mattie Ross in True Grit (Matt Damon! Matt Damon!). The writer talks about the total appropriateness of the braids for Mattie’s character – they remind us that she’s a little girl, but one with the gumption to take on a chase after her father’s killer. The hairstyle brings gravitas to a character who could otherwise be seen as silly or weak.

Mattie’s look…clean, sophisticated, take-no-prisoners.

When I was little, I always wanted to wear my hair like that…but somehow, braids on a redhead come across more as Pippi Longstocking than serious, father’s-murderer-seeking, fast-talking pre-teen.

Pippi's Look - Whimsical, joyous, and swashbucklingly chic

Oh, and if you haven’t seen True Grit yet, do so. Immediately. Fantastic movie, and not just because of MD.
